Abstract

The relationship between cinema and politics has been a defining feature of Indian democracy, particularly in South India. Several film stars have successfully transformed their screen popularity into political capital. Among the latest and most significant examples is Vijay, popularly known as "Thalapathy" Vijay. His transition from one of India's most celebrated film actors to a political leader reflects changing trends in contemporary Indian politics, where celebrity influence, social media engagement, youth participation, and image-based leadership have become increasingly important. This paper critically examines Vijay's political emergence, the formation of the political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and the broader implications of celebrity politics in India. The study explores how Vijay's political journey symbolizes the transformation of political communication, voter behavior, and democratic participation in the digital age. The paper argues that Vijay's rise demonstrates the growing intersection between entertainment culture and political mobilization, representing a new model of leadership in twenty-first-century India.
