Abstract

The digital transformation of rural tourism holds the promise of creating sustainable development opportunities for underserved regions, while also preserving their cultural heritage and natural resources. It offers substantial potential for sustainable development, yet the successful integration of these technologies depends on addressing regional challenges and opportunities. According to the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, Rayalaseema witnessed a 10% year-over-year increase in tourist arrivals from 2018 to 2022, yet most visitors are concentrated in urban hubs, leaving rural areas underexplored. Moreover, the use of virtual reality (VR) and 360-degree video tours could play a crucial role in preserving local heritage while attracting global audiences. For example, a pilot VR project conducted in the Kurnool district attracted international tourists who could explore the region’s heritage sites before physically visiting, thereby increasing tourist arrivals by 15% within a year. However, the digital divide remains a significant barrier, with rural areas in Rayalaseema facing limited internet connectivity and low digital literacy. In 2021, only 50% of households in the region had access to reliable internet services, which constrains the potential reach of digital tourism initiatives. This paper explores the role of digital innovations in fostering sustainable rural tourism in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Rayalaseema, known for its historical sites, natural beauty, and vibrant culture, faces significant challenges in attracting and retaining tourists, due to infrastructural limitations and a lack of digital engagement. However, with the advent of technologies like mobile apps, e-commerce platforms, digital marketing, and virtual reality, there are emerging opportunities to enhance the rural tourism experience, boost local economies, and ensure long-term sustainability. The paper emphasizes that overcoming digital literacy gaps and addressing infrastructure limitations must be prioritized to ensure long-term sustainable growth in rural tourism while protecting the region's cultural and environmental integrity.
